UNITED NATIONS SDGs AGENDA 2030 - REVIEW OF KENYA’S PERFORMANCE

According to SDG Center for Africa and Sustainable Development Solutions Network (2019): Africa SDG Index and Dashboards Report 2019. Kigali and New York: SDG Center for Africa and Sustainable Development Solutions Network, the following paragraphs highlights the general performance of Kenya.

Kenya’s overall performance according to the report had an Index Score of 56.5, a Regional Average Score of 48.8 and ranked 15th out of 52 countries with respect to Africa Index Rank. The current assessment of Kenya on the 2019 SDG Dashboard indicates that the country is facing major challenges with achieving SDGs 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 14 and 16. Relating to SDGs 1, 4, 5, 10,11,15 and 17, there are significant number of challenges being faced whiles challenges still remain with respect to SDG 8 and 13. Kenya has achieved SDG 12; Responsible Consumption and Production according to the dashboard report.

According to the SDG Trends of this report, Kenya is moderately improving in the achievement level of SDGs 3, 5, 8, 9 and 14. Also the country is on track or maintaining SDG achievement with respect to SDG 13; Climate Action. The country according to the report seems to be stagnating in the area of achieving SDG 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 11, 16 and 17. There is no available information on the country’s performance with respect to achieving SDGs 10 and 12. The report also recorded a decreasing performance in achieving SDG 15; Life on land.

The report further on gave information about the country comparing its performance with other African Indices; Kenya scored 63.3 out of 100 and ranked 14 out of 52 countries in the Africa Gender Equality Index (2015), Pertaining to the Africa Regional Integration Index (2016), Kenya scored 0.76 out of 1 and ranked 1st out of 52 countries. Ibrahim Index on African Governance (2018) also scored Kenya 59.8 out of 100 and ranked 11th out of 54 countries. The last index that was also captured in the report is the Africa Infrastructure Development Index (2019). In this index, Kenya scored 25.92 out of 100 and ranked 18th out of 54 countries.
